Nasal irrigation

Nasal irrigation is rinsing your nasal cavities by irrigating them with saline solution through the nostrils. It can help relieve upper respiratory symptoms, allergies, nasal problems, and sinus infections.

Types of nasal irrigators

  • Syringe
  • Nasal sinus rinse bottle

How to prepare the saline solution

  • Method 1: Use a ready-to-use saline solution.
  • Method 2: Make your saline solution by mixing a salt packet with a volume of water according to the instruction of each brand. The water should be sterile or boiled. Shake well until the salt completely dissolves.

How to clean a nasal cavity

  • Wash your hands with soap and water.
  • When deploying a syringe, fill it with saline solution and insert its tip into your nostril.
  • If you use a nasal rinse bottle, fill the bottle with a ready-to-use saline solution or mix your saline solution as instructed and shake well. Then, place the tip of the rinse bottle into your nostril.
  • Lean forward. Take a deep breath and hold your breath.
  • Spray or squeeze the bottle directing the saline into the nasal cavity. Gently spray or squeeze the bottle until the saline solution flows out the other nostril or your mouth.
  • Repeat the step through the other nostril. Alternate the irrigation until both nasal cavities are clean, noticing that the liquid draining out of your nose is clear and mucus-free.
  • Clean the nasal irrigation equipment and wipe it dry.

Benefits

Nasal irrigation can:

  • Remove mucus, pathogens, allergens, and irritants from your nose and sinuses.
  • Relieve the symptoms such as runny or stuffy nose due to allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, common cold, influenza, and COVID-19.
  • Keep your sinus passages moisturized.
  • Improve the function of nasal cavity cell linings, which clear excess mucus in the nasal passageway.

Usually, nasal irrigation is safe as long as the equipment and saline solution is clean. However, there are cautions for those who have certain health conditions.

Consult your doctor if you have the following health issues:

  • Ear pain or pressure
  • Completely blocked nostrils, nose pain, history of nosebleeds
  • Previous ear or sinus surgery
