Colorectal Clinic

Colon cancer has become the third leading cause of cancer death in Thailand among all cancers. Paying attention to the colon and rectum is as crucial as caring for other organs. Signs and symptoms of colorectal diseases, such as chronic constipation, alternating constipation and diarrhea, bloody bowel movement or bloody mucus in stool, black stool (melena), anal incontinence, abdominal pain of unknown cause, and an abdominal mass, require immediate attention from a colorectal specialist for a diagnosis.

Additionally, individuals over 45 years old, those diagnosed with bowel polyps, and those with a history of ulcerative colitis, including those with a family history of colorectal cancer, should have an annual colonoscopy to screen for colon cancer. The early detection of precancerous tumors or early-onset colorectal cancer can prevent or aid successful treatment outcomes better than detection at a more advanced stage.

If signs or suspicions of abnormalities in the large intestine and rectum are detected, patients can seek diagnosis and treatment at the Colorectal Surgery Center, MedPark Hospital. The center is staffed by experienced surgeons specializing in colorectal surgery, with expertise in treating diseases and abnormalities related to the large intestine and rectum.
Experienced medical staff, nurses, and multidisciplinary teams are well-resourced with advanced technology and tools in our operating rooms, ensuring the best possible outcomes and facilitating patient improvement and recovery in due course.

Why the Colorectal Clinic at MedPark Hospital?

  • Our surgeons have over ten years of expertise in treating colorectal diseases domestically and abroad. They successfully performed complex and challenging surgical procedures, such as high or recurring anal fistula and rectal cancer within the pelvis.
  • Our highly skilled surgeons leverage cutting-edge technology to perform minimally invasive laparoscopic procedures, effectively tackling even the most complex medical challenges. These procedures are led by surgeons with extensive experience and a proven ability to handle minimally invasive techniques.
  • Good clinical treatment outcomes, such as normal bowel continence after hemorrhoidectomy and a curative anal fistula surgery with a single LIFTS (ligation of intersphincteric fistula tract surgery, allow patients to return to their daily life under better and happier circumstances

Tests and procedures

  • For hemorrhoids and chronic anal fissures treatments with hemorrhoidectomy and lateral internal sphincterotomy, surgeons perform these surgeries without spinal anesthesia (to reduce postoperative urinary retention) but instead perform the surgery under general anesthesia and local anesthesia. The advantages are faster recovery and ambulation after surgery. Moreover, surgeons' use of absorbable sutures removes the need for suture removal. Plus, unlike the traditional approach, a sitz bath is not required to reduce inflammation.
  • Perianal abscess surgery, performed by a colorectal surgeon, prioritizes sphincter muscle preservation while effectively draining the pus. This approach offers a high cure rate and reduces the risk of complications.
  • Fistula-in-ano surgery with a new technique called LIFTS (ligation of intersphincter fistula surgery) can prevent injury to the anal sphincter and increase the likelihood of a cure (if a cure is not achievable the first time, subsequent surgeries will be more difficult due to scar tissues). The dissolvable suture used in LIFTS obviates the need for suture removal and sitz bath to reduce inflammation.
  • Laparoscopic colorectal surgery is a standard procedure for colorectal cancer with faster recovery than open surgery. This technique allows a surgeon a better angle to view the cancerous tumors, especially for resecting rectal cancer in the narrow confines of the pelvis. Other advantages of laparoscopic colorectal surgery include reduced injury to vital structures near the surgical sites, such as the ureter and aorta, and facilitating sphincter-sparing procedures.

Specialties

  • Fistula-in-ano surgery, including redo surgery, is performed by our colorectal surgeons with a track record of more than 100 successful fistula-in-ano surgeries. LIFTS has up to 97% rate of successful cure at first attempt with no injury to the anal sphincter, facilitating faster recovery and a better quality of life without bowel incontinence.
  • Hemorrhoidectomy by surgeons with over 1,000 successful operations with a high cure rate, better recovery, and no bowel incontinence
  • Laparoscopic colorectal surgery provides effective postoperative outcomes without anastomotic leakage or recurrent colorectal cancer* (*based on a 6-year follow-up of postoperative patients).
